PEAS IN A PODCAST
PEAS IN A PODCAST PRESENT
EAST BOSTON VOICES
East Boston Voices is a three-episode podcast series created by us, Peas In A Podcast. We are a group of students from MIT's Co-Design Studio exploring gentrification and displacement in East Boston. We interviewed students, activists, and community organizers from the area to hear about their experiences with and thoughts on the effects of displacement and Boston's housing crisis. We also learned of the steps people are taking to fight back against unfair evictions and rent hikes in order to remain in their community. Listen to the series and browse our resource page to learn more.
EPISODE OVERVIEWS
EPISODE ONE
In this episode we introduce ourselves and our project: to learn more about gentrification and displacement in East Boston by interviewing community members. We focus on uplifting the voices of students from Zumix, a local non-profit organization that facilitates self exploration and discovery through classes specialized in audio production for low-income youth.
EPISODE TWO
In this episode we focus on what displacement looks like in East Boston and how it affects the local community. We specifically hear from Zumix students Lydia and Dom as well as activists Jorge and Felisa. Among the covered topics are Latinxs in East Boston, rent hikes, and the impact displacement has on children and teenagers.
EPISODE THREE
In our third and final podcast episode, we take a look at next steps for the East Boston community. Jorge and Felisa makes observations on the rapidly changing population of East Boston. Lydia describes work being done by City Life/Vida Urbana as well as Zumix. We encourage everyone to continue learning of the displacement and gentrification problems in East Boston and hope you help spread the word about what is happening in this community.
